Synagogue Emanu-El is a Conservative, egalitarian synagogue in Charleston, SC. Our synagogue is a community of approximately 340 families, some of whom have been in Charleston for generations, along with many newcomers who have been attracted to this vibrant, growing, dynamic city recognized for its culture, history and culinary scene. We are in transition in our demographic make-up and methods of communication, pursuing a balance of tradition and innovation. In this Administrative Director position, we are seeking candidates who enjoy a challenge and want to help lead our success.
Key Responsibilities:
• Partner with development and fundraising. Enthusiastically help create, plan, and execute fundraising activities. Identify, write and obtain grants.
• Hire and supervise staff. Ensure efficient and effective communication between staff members, and allocate staffing resources as needed. Conduct performance evaluations using best practices.
• Orchestrate synagogue functions. Provide oversight and in person supervision of synagogue events with appropriate scheduling, administrative and logistical support.
• Monitor revenues and expenditures. Prepare budget and cash flow reports, oversee payroll and congregant invoicing.
• Encourage new membership through outreach. Respond to inquiries, maintain contact and proactively encourage prospective members.
• Maintain congregation satisfaction. Look for opportunities for improvement. Respond to suggestions. Assist with life cycle events.
• Oversee scheduling of events. Provide administrative and logistical support to Operations Manager for synagogue events.
• Provide support to the Board of Trustees. Provide appropriate background materials and resources to the President and Board Committees. Partner with committee chairs.
• Oversee communication of events to congregation and board members. Oversee monthly synagogue bulletin. Review all printed and electronic materials sent to congregation communicating upcoming meetings, events, services and initiatives.
• Ensure the physical building is maintained appropriately. Supervise day to day building operations, supervise janitorial staff, manage vendors, interface with Building and Grounds committee for necessary projects.
• Implement synagogue security. Partner with the Board and the Security Committee to implement recommended procedures and building protection.
Qualifications
• Strong leadership ability, with experience managing staff and encouraging volunteers.
• Enthusiasm for both leading and rolling-up his/her sleeves to get the job done.
• Solid planning, analytical and conceptual skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to interact and connect with diverse populations.
• Ability to proactively identify key issues and develop creative and appropriate solutions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.
• Knowledge of Jewish ritual, holiday and life-cycle traditions.
• Willingness to work evening and weekend hours as needed to attend synagogue events and meetings.
• Demonstrated ability to proactively manage and optimize financial resources.
• Development experience including researching and writing grant applications.
• Experience in facilities management.
